NOTES FROM STEPHEN

JSuite is back, and better than ever

Hi, Stephen here.

I hope you had a great holiday season! Sorry there hasn’t been an email in a few months - we moved to South Florida over the summer and rolled straight into the holidays.

But now the weekly email is back and better than ever. It's no longer a classifieds board - that was getting stale and the quality was dipping. Starting today, it will be a short note from me, an insightful conversation with a JSuite member, and the best threads from the JSuite Community.

Let me know what you think of the new format. You can reply directly to this email.

We’ll show you how to start a newsletter in <30 minutes, scale to 1,000 readers, and make your first $10,000 in revenue.

“Choose your advisors wisely. Seek advice about seeking advice.”

Zach Reich

You advise ultra-high-net-worth families at a multi-family office. What's the most rewarding part of the job?

Many people imagine wealth makes you worry-free. Often, financial anxiety remains even after amassing (or receiving) significant wealth. For me, it's rewarding to simply help people not have to worry. They know their assets are looked after. I also enjoy learning about new and innovative investment strategies, especially in private equity and private credit.

If you had a time machine and could speak with someone 10 years before a big wealth event, what would you tell them?

First, plan in advance. If you're anticipating a major wealth-creation event, seek professional advice beforehand. Second, choose your advisors wisely; seek advice about seeking advice. Get multiple recommendations, speak with references, and look hard at incentive structures. With lawyers, accountants, and tax advisors, you pay a fee and get a service. With financial advisors, incentives can be more complicated. I strongly recommend working only with retainer-based advisors and avoiding anyone who receives kickbacks from the funds you invest in. That's a direct conflict of interest. Lastly, don't rush. Nothing terrible happens if you miss a couple of opportunities, but you'll regret locking your money into ill-advised, illiquid investments.

Any counterintuitive advice for someone about to experience a major wealth-creation event?

Be wary of the usual suspects adjacent to the event, who are often the first to pounce. Typically that's bankers, though not always. Private banking has its place, and some services are worth the high cost, but know what private banks are actually good for and where you're overpaying.

Tell us more about the private equity and private credit strategies you're looking at.

Private market investing is the art (or science) of finding experienced managers who can exploit market inefficiencies before too many people flood the strategy with capital and drive down yields. Lately we've been looking at operationally intensive special-situation strategies in both private equity (carve-outs, for example) and private credit (such as distressed debt), mostly in the lower middle market.

If you could get one message in front of every JSuite member, what would it be?

If you're considering moving to Israel but worried about making a living here, there has never been an easier time to come. When I arrived in 2005, immigrants without fluent Hebrew were relegated to night-shift call-center jobs paying barely above minimum wage. Today the high-tech sector has opened entire classes of opportunity across the value chain and is lifting the rest of the economy with it. It's a fantastic time for entrepreneurial businesspeople.

Have you met anyone in JSuite you'd like to give a shout-out?

Through JSuite I was introduced to Aaron Holtzman, Partner at Crane & Holtzman, a boutique full-service accounting firm with offices in New York City and Austin. We had a great first meeting. Introductions like these often lead to mutual referrals, so we're always interested in connecting with talented professionals who serve HNW families: tax advisory, international law, and related services.
